About JM Narrowboat Painting

For over 20 years, Jamie has been painting narrowboats at Devizes Marina. Working from his fully enclosed workshop, he begins by removing all external fittings and fixtures, including windows, roof vents, and brassware. The existing paint is then mechanically stripped from bow to stern.

Next, two to three coats of anti-corrosion primer are applied. During this stage, any areas requiring filling or metalwork are carefully repaired. This is followed by three coats of high-build undercoat, colour matched to enhance the final finish. Once the undercoat has fully cured, typically after a couple of days, the surface is sanded smooth (flatted back) in preparation for the final three topcoats (more if needed).

All paint is applied using brush and roller using traditional techniques. Non-slip areas and coach lines are added where needed. Once painting is complete, the fittings and fixtures are reinstalled using the appropriate foam tapes and sealants.

Jamie does not offer signwriting himself but regularly works with Ginny Barlow to ensure this can be completed while the boat is in the paint dock.

He primarily uses Craft Master and International paints, but is happy to work with other brands if they are suitable for the job.

Jamie is also available for smaller projects such as panel repaints, coach lines, or general touch-ups. He can help with window resealing or fitting new windows as well.
